Abstract
The goal of surgical treatment of an intertrochanteric hip fractures is to obtain a stable reduction of the fracture fragments and internally fix them with a well placed, mechanically strong implant. Ideally, the results of surgical intervention
should
be secure enough to permit early or immediate protected weight bearing.
Many devices have been developed and used for the more stable fixation. Recently Gamma nailing was introduced taking diverse advantages of conventional devices.
We had studied prospectively 30cases of gamma nail fixation for the treatment of elderly intertrochanteric fracure from January 1991 to June 1994 to analyze the availibility of Gamma nail an postoperative complications.
At follow-up over 1 year, all patients continued to ambulate and all fractures healed securely. Mean operation time was 79 minutes anmean blood loss was 462ml. The degree of sliding of lag screw was 4.38mm and the decrease of neck shaft angle was
3.14¡Æ. there was no significant mechanical complication such as a fracture of the femoral shaft, fixation failure. We obtained satisfactory results on treatment of elderly patients with intertrochanteric fracture of femur sing Gamma nail. So we
consider that the Gamma nail would be a useful internal fixatorin the treatment of intertrochanteric fractures of geriatric patients.
